The Work that inspired Me

Las Meninas is a Portuguese term that means “bridesmaids”. This is the most famous artwork of Diego Velázquez that portrays the royal family of Philip IV of Spain and himself, intent on painting the picture. Executed in 1656, the complex painting is full of extraordinary elements. The jewels of the collection are inspired by the butterfly of Maria Augustina of Sarmiento and Isabella di Velasco’s bracelet, two of the bridesmaids of infanta Margherita.

Bracelet

Velázquez – Las Meninas

Losing myself in the crowded rooms of the Museum del Prado and finding myself before the Velazquez painting de Las Meninas with Isabel de Velasco showing off the precious bracelet on her wrist: a magical and masterful game of scenes and mirrors in which the gaze of the viewer goes to the painter, from the painter to the subject of the painting and from the subject of the painting, not yet revealed, focusing on the subject , the infanta Margarita.

I wear the two bracelets on my wrist and live in another time, in another place, in another life. I am Isabel who watches me while I am outside the painting, I am Margarita the noble and regal child, I am Maria Augustina who politely and lovingly bows to her little powerful friend and looks at her with tenderness.

It’s me, it’s them, my mirror, my dream. Three bracelets in fusion with decorations in texture and bubbles, embellished with reflecting surfaces in gold – rhodium or enriched with settings of crystal stones on rhodium.

Ring

Velázquez – Las Meninas

The butterfly that flies in my fantasy gently rests on my hand, detaching itself from the splendid hairstyle of the Isabel de Velasco menina. How much femininity and how much charm in these head-like decorations of the chaperones of the enfanta Margarita. I observe Isabel and the charm materializes from the preciousness of delicate lace to the concreteness that immediately wraps my fingers. The butterfly becomes shininess, in the minimalist forms of bijoux with crystal stones on gold or light sapphire stones on rhodium.

Hairclip

Velázquez – Las Meninas

Small silver and golden metallic drops blossom from the butterfly wings that adorn my hair or are those of Isabel de Velasco?

From the past, from a palace, from a woman who was a friend and confidant, a devoted mate of the young princess, to me, to you, to them the butterfly that became a jewel. On my hair, on your hair … the thin golden hairpin glitters like a nugget: I plunge with the gaze of a child into the picture and touch the great beauty.

Earrings

Velázquez – Las Meninas

They do not escape, the two thin butterflies barely resting on the sides of my face, they whisper words that plunge me into the whirling a whirlwind of the imagination: born from a painting, mysterious and wonderful that was defined by Luca Giordano as “the theology of art”. They emerged from a life of centuries, they materialize, the smooth and sinuous golden wings shine embellished by a rose navette and those in rhodium with sapphire navette.
